( AU Smartpass).

The tumultuous youthfulness of a young man with the face of a grown-up.
While he kept remnants of puberty in his physiognomy, as a soldier, Jean Kirstein gave the feeling of being a steady, young boy.
The interview begins by announcing him. He salutes according to the formalities, then, clearly embarrassed, he turns away.

Jean- Its not like someone told me to. I decided on my own to join the Survey Corps.

Its nice to meet you.

  • I know it cant be helped, but I guess you cant avoid thinking about this.

Jean: After the attack, I ended up thinking about who might die next At that timeI thought that if I had been there, maybe I could have saved them.

[A second part of the interview is planned as well!! Jean is overwhelmed by a storm of questions!?]

  • The reason behind Now, what should be done? comes from Marcos words, right?

Jean : That, and I also felt like I didnt know how to vent about my regrets and responsibilities. Although, I was in a different squad If Marco had been with me, I wonder if he would still be alive.

  • Thats because he knew you well, right?

Jean: Thats right. When we were about to graduate, for him to say something like Youre not a strong person, Jean shows that very well. There were many things We went through a lot.

  • However, Marcos wish was to join the Military Police as well, right? What are the details on what made his death the reason why you joined the survey corps?

Jean: Marcosaid that I was someone who knew what should be done. At first, I didnt pay much attention to these words, butafter the assault on Trost, I understood what he meant. At last, I could see what had to be done. As if I felt like I could try and entrust my fate to the late Marco.

  • On the other hand, what are the things that you had to work on?

Jean: There weremany. When I was a trainee, I was absolutely confident that I was excellent. If I think about it now, I was nothing but a brat back then If I failed even by a little, I would be disheartened right away. During those moments, the one that would stand beside me was Marco.

  • What was it that he said to you?

Jean: He was just there, silent. So, yes, even if I wouldnt stop complaining, he would remain calm

  • For instance?

Jean: I always wanted to get good points during training, I would be in a bad mood whenever I got injured. But Marco would remain like this no matter who he was facing.

  • Did your choice of words adapt to the situation?

Jean: No, not really. I was always making fun of him for being an honor student, and yet, Marcohe would just laugh. Really I wonder why he kept company with someone like me back then, when I was only thinking of myself, and no one else

  • He wouldnt quarrel with you?

Jean: Well, first of all, that guy got rarely offended But he was a good guy to begin with. Way too good. Even though he could always see through everything, he was trying to avoid conflict. He possessed a kind heart, and he was considerate to his friends He was that kind of person.

  • What kind of relationship did you two have?

Jean: Whatever it was, we often hung out together. Our grades were pretty close, so being together during training also became a frequent occurence

  • Well, on the documents I have here, it says that the circumstances behind your decision to join the Survey Corps was the death of Marco Bodt, who fell during battle. Do you feel like you told us enough about him?

Jean: Yeah I knew you would ask me about him.

...I'll repeat this once again. What do you want to ask?

A summary (from twitter)

  • She was unable to become foolishly honest like her fellow trainees, went with the flow of the system in the society, and joined the Military Police. She just wants to save herself.
  • Her job (as MP) is mainly tasks like arranging documents. The Garrison usually deal with the place (crime scenes, maybe?)
  • Shes not friendly with the new soldiers (MP) even though she work with them. They joined the MP because they prioritized themselves above the others, so its pointless to look forward to making friends and comrades.
  • When asked about the evaluation (listed on the documents) about her solidarity nature, she replied that she cooperated properly whenever necessary during training.
  • When asked about Eren, she replied that even when she said shes a weak fragile girl, he will still charge over, and so she had no choice but to fight him. Thats because she knows how to control it. (あしらい方は知っているからnot sure what this is referring to. The fighting techniques or her strength, maybe?)

The above panels (from twitter too)

Q: Lets talk about your relationship with others. We have received many questions asking about your relationship with your fellow trainees
Especially those who are ranked close to you.
Annie: AhThey joined the SL?

Q: Yes. All of them have been doing well.
Annie: I seeSo they are doing well.

Q: We have received many questions about Armin and Bertholdt. What are your impressions of them?
Annie: Arminhe lacks strength so is often a hindrance, but he doesnt complain or ask for helphe has will-power.

Q: What about Bertholdt?
Annie: I dont have much impression of him?

Q: According to rumors, I heard he is interested in you, and hes often sitting beside you during meals
Annie: Yes. But I dont have much impression of him.

Q: But you really dont have any impression of him?
Annie: His results are good, and we often end up in the same team during training. But thats pretty normal, so I never thought much about it.

Q; This is getting pathetic. Lets move on to the next question. Is there anyone else among the fellow trainees, other than the ones I named, that you were friendly with?
Annie: Not reallyeveryone is the same.

- (omitted)
Armin: I met Eren when I was receiving treatment from his father. I was weak and often got bullied and injured, so I often had to see the doctor. At first, we just hang out together because we had no friends. It was thanks to my Grandpas book that we became friends.

- We have received a question which says How do you behave with Eren typically, because Jean has mentioned that he finds your attachment with Eren disgusting.
Armin: AhThat isreally mean, to say that its disgusting. I think the problem lies with how Jean sees things.

- What do you mean?
Armin: After I joined the training corps, I often perform my 3DMG check with Marco and sat by Reiner during mealtimes. I guess its because Jean is always looking at Mikasa, that he tends to notice us together.

- Do you have a girl you like?
Armin: I think that having someone you think of as important, can be a strength, and can also be a weakness. I have many timeswitnessed people losing their senses, and failing to make sound decisions, after losing someone important to them.

- I see.
Armin: There are also people who are forced into a dilemma because of such special feelings. I think that those feelings are often made use of.

- I guess you can think of it that way.
Armin: That is why, if I have someone I like, I wont say it. It will become a weakness of mine just kidding.

- I feel that Ive seen a scary smile just now Now, for the next question, Have you and Eren or Mikasa ever fought?
Armin: I have never fought with Eren or Mikasa before. However, there were once when I got thrown by Mikasa, who was trying to stop the fight, together with Eren, since I was stubbornly still fighting with the bullies.

- (omitted)
Armin: I have studied with Eren and Mikasa before. But since Mikasa remembers everything after studying once, theres no point for her to join in. Instead, we often studied together at the boys dorm.

- (omitted)
Armin: I think lectures and exams are hard.

- What is your impression on Jean?
Armin: I think that Jean, when he was a trainee, has potential, but his effort is fruitless. But that has changed now. Jean has a bad guy face, but it seems like he acknowledges me, so gradually, he became someone I could trust

- (omitted)
Armin: Really? I carry out my 3DMG check with him frequently, and we get along well. He treats everyone with considerationjust that, our opinions regarding the government never agreed.

- Can I ask more about it?
Armin: Marco respects and believed in the government. He never doubted them. I noticed that the government policies are full of contradictions, so when we talk about thatbut, its always Marco whod give in. He would listen to my lengthy speculations with a troubled face, but he still listened to the end.

- Hes really kind.
Armin: Yes. Im sure thathe is too kind in this cruel world.

- (omitted)
Armin: When Annie told me I was weak, but has guts, I just thought that even though she appears to be cold and friendless, she still takes a good look at people around her. Perhaps she spotted me when I was late to practice and stubbornly refuses help from other people.

- Have you ever won in hand to hand? Did you win against Krista?
Armin: Hahdo I look this weakI might not be good, but I managed to pass.

- Here we have some pretty strange questions like Have you ever been mistaken for a girl?, and Have you ever been told youre like a girl?
Armin: EhhThat is hard to answer. It would be a lieif I were to say no

- Heres another question asking How do you feel if someone calls you cute?
Armin: WellI dont feel good even if I got called cute.

- Any particular thoughts about it?
Armin: For example, if I looked like a girland it would help to accomplish a missionI think, I would make use of it.

- Thats cool.
Armin: Of course I hate it, but for example, in a decoy missionit would be much safer than using a real girl. But I dont think such tactics is needed to fight against titans.

- Titans eat irregardless of your genders, I guess.
Armin: Butour enemies, might not be just the titans

- What do you mean?
Armin: Its nothing but pure speculationsjust that, I cant say that humanity are always united

- You mean such a situation where humans have to lie to each other might arise?
Armin: If Im able to help when that happensI will want to make use of whatever I can.

- (omitted)
Armin: Among my classmates, only Reiner, Bertholdt and Marco are great opponents at chess. Once Eren or Jean gets heated up, their thoughts become simple, and its easy to read their moves.

- Is there any of your body parts you like?
Armin: That sounds like a question you ask a girlrather, I wish I was tougher and had more stamina.

- (omitted)
Armin: The first thing I want to see is the sea.

Powerful. There are times when the passionate researcher Hanji doesnt take a bath for several days. Weve received concerned voices asking, Dont Captain Levi and Commander Erwin get angry?

Hanji: Ah but you see, the sample is right in front of me, I cant just go take a bath! Everyone did say something I think, but stopped eventually.

Its long, so the rest is snipped under here:

So, is this not like theyve already given up on you?

Hanji: Probably! Mike and Erwin say nothing about it. Ah, but Levi

Did he say anything about it?

Hanji: Uhh from time to time I black out from getting hit, then when I become conscious again I would get splashed at and somehow its like having a bath.

It is done by force, isnt it?

Hanji: That, perhaps, is more like cleaning than having a bath! I think he planned it all out with my subordinates, but because I lost consciousness I cant be sure.

Everybodys names have been mentioned, so we would like to hear about your interpersonal relationships. Weve got a question that asks, What impression do you have of firstly Commander Erwin, then Captain Levi, Squad Leader Mike and Deputy Leader Moblit.

Hanji: Right Ive known Erwin and Levi for a long time. Erwin actively supports my research, so hes helped me a lot. According to what he has said, I think he also holds some kind of doubt towards the structure of this world.

What about Captain Levi and Squad Leader Mike?

Hanji: Levi you see, is bad at talking and a clean freak so everyone gets disillusioned, but hes a good guy who thinks about his comrades. He has a rough attitude, but he listens to my research results and has the composure to only think about it. Isnt hes a good superior officer?

Hanji: (cut off) Yeah, its a strange attitude to people he meets for the first time, but the position of Squad Leader is justified.

What impression do you have of Deputy Leader Moblit, who is also an adjutant?

Hanji: Moblit? Hes an outstanding adjutant! His sketches used for research are good too. But, the fly in the ointment is that he always comes to stop me when Im getting to the good part.

Doesnt he do that because he is worried for you? Among the questions we got, some of them such as, Arent you worrying him too much? and Please let him rest once in a while showed concern for him.

We have received many questions about your interpersonal relationships, such as, Do you have any friends and acquaintances? and Who do you get along with?

Hanji: Friends and acquaintances huh Like Ive said before, I adjust my daily life cycle to the Corps movements.

Your schedule is filled with research and duties, I see. In between all that, is there anyone you often talk to?

Hanji: Ah, it depends on the plan or formation but Im often stationed close to Levis squad, so I think we do talk a lot.

You have mentioned that youve known each other for a long time.

Hanji: Levis rough with his words, so it sounds like hes angry, right? But he doesnt truly feel that way, so there are times I help to explain that to everyone in his squad. Interpretation, people have called it.

Other than Levi, who else do you get along with?

Hanji: When I see the veteran soldiers who enlisted around the same time as me if theyre still alive, that is I would talk to them a lot. Also my subordinates.

I see. There are also many questions like, Can you see with goggles? and How good is your eyesight without glasses? about your glasses or goggles.

Hanji: Without glasses I can still see the face of the person in front of me, but its inconvenient during battles or research, I guess. Glasses can easily fall off, so I dont use them on missions. There are skillful soldiers who can operate 3DMG with glasses, you know, but Im not very good at it.

We also have a question about your glasses and goggles that goes, They seem expensive, how many spares do you have?

Hanji: I keep one or two pairs on hand, if theyre both broken I claim them with the Survey Corps expenses.

You put them down to expenses!

Hanji: But theyre necessities, so its a required expense! I dont do things like Levi who claims expenses for the black tea he favors, you know?

That black tea is paid for with expenses.

Hanji: Yes, glasses and black tea, theyre all supplies for the whole Survey Corps. Its because our lifestyle is guaranteed like this that theres no shortage of youngsters who aspire to be soldiers.

Youre certainly right about that. Another question we have is, Do you do housework?

Hanji: Like cooking, or cleaning? Hmm, Ive done it before, on duty.

Trainee soldiers cook their own meals, and on expeditions cooking for yourself is also a must.

Hanji: Well, for me right now, as a Squad Leader, I leave most of it to my subordinates I guess.

We also have the question Whats your type? Excluding titans, that is.

Hanji: Ahh everyone sure likes that kind of topic. I dont think about it much, but lets see, someone who is fine even if I cant pay attention to them, I guess.

You respect freedom.

Hanji: Mm-hmm, for me right now, Im interested in mainly titans, and also the structure of the world and so on way too many things. So, even if I had someone like that, I probably cant spend much time together with them.

So someone who can accept your behavior and let you be free is ideal, isnt it.

Hanji: Thats how it turns out. I dont think such a convenient person exists though.

Do you chat with people like Deputy Leader Moblit?

Hanji: Moblit says things a mother would say. Like, did you eat properly? Or, did you sleep well? And his every word is really funny.

For example?

Hanji: Once, during an experiment I think, he said to me, Do you really want to live!? Pretty much the only one who says such interesting things to me is Moblit!

I see. Then, Im going to change the topic a bit and introduce an unconventional question. Please tell us about the time you recently got angry.

Hanji: Angry? Me? What a strange question.

Ive been told youre the scariest when you get angry.
Hanji: Thats not true! Erwin and Levi have way scarier faces! Well now that I think about it

Did something come to mind?

Hanji: Its not recent, but. Long ago, I got into an argument with a Military Police officer who made fun of the Survey Corps He said such terrible things, I couldnt take it anymore, and grabbed the scruff of his neck and threw him on the floor almost.

Thats scary!

Hanji: Haha Its the folly of youth. Since Erwin and the others quickly intervened, it didnt become an issue. Other than that when I get mad, I kick and wreck tables and chairs but doesnt everyone do that?

Uh, I wonder about that You give a calm impression, but there is something on fire hidden inside you.

Hanji: Im always on fire! Its for the sake of unraveling the mysteries of this world!

If mankind were finally liberated from the titans, what would they do?

Hanji: Mankind would rule. But I would like to research vegetation outside the walls, or study about humanitys past.

She sits upright in a chair as I visit her at the barracks of the Scouting Legion.
She gives a small nod when she notices me, but our eyes never meet.
She is Mikasa Ackerman, an unprecedented talent in humanitys history.

"Nice to meet you", I say. She answers "Ok," and the interview begins.

Q: Are you nervous?
Mikasa: a little bit.

Q: I heard youre not normally good at conversations
Mikasa: I will answer any questions asked.

Q: Then I shall accept your advice and begin right away.

Q: Mikasa, you graduated at the top of your class. You could have joined the Military Police, but why did you choose the Scouting Legion?
Mikasa: BecauseEren chose the Scouting Legion.

Q: Eren Yeager, the one from the same class and hometown as yourself. Did he ask you to do this?
Mikasa: No. That was my own decision.

Q: Yeager wanted to enter the Scouting Legion ever since he joined the training corps. You didnt try to stop him?
Mikasa: You meanwhy didnt I try to convince him to join the other Military Units?

Q: Yes. Because hes your family, so I thought you would recommend the safer routes.
Mikasa: Now that you mention it, I didwhen we were younger, I was against joining the Scouting Legion.

Q: And why did that change?
Mikasa: Because Eren didnt change his mind. And

Q: And?
Mikasa: AuntieErens mother said that we have to help each other.

Q: You spent your childhood with Eren.
How were your days with the Yeagers?
Mikasa: Ah, we often fought with the other kids in town.

Q: Im surprised that there were kids who wanted to fight you.
Mikasa: Eren provoked them, and they bullied Armin

Q: So you were the mediator.
Mikasa: I beat them upand tossed Eren around.

Q: Ehyou tossed him?
Mikasa: Yes.

Q: I thought you were the mediator?
Mikasa: ? Other than tosses and punches, are there other ways to stop people who dont listen?

Q: Ah, youre right.
Mikasa: ButI failed once.

Q: How?
Mikasa: I threw him too hardand he ended up in the river.

Q: He fell into the river?!
Mikasa: It was only once. Armin noticed the river and tried to stop me, but I threw him into it, too.
And then they both caught coldsI have reflected on my actions.

Q: That was a horrible thing you did.
Mikasa: After thatI made sure no water was around whenever I tossed Eren.
No fire, eitherburns are worse than colds, after all.

Q: Youre rightdo you remember anything else other than fights?
Like Armin Arlert, whom you just mentioned. Hes a childhood friend, too, right?
Mikasa: Eren and Arminoften talk about the outside world.
Armin would bring along his grandfathers book

Q: About the world beyond the walls?
Mikasa: Their eyes always shone brightly whenever they talked about venturing outsideI liked watching them as they spoke.

Q: Lets talk about your much younger childhood. What kind of kid do you think you were?
Mikasa: I was raised in the mountains and we grew vegetables for a living. Iwas a sheltered child.

Q: Sounds like you had a happy and normal family.
Mikasa: It was different from living in a town. There were no kids near my house.

Q: You mustve been precious to your parents.
Mikasa: Yes. At that time, my world was smallmy father and mother were everything.

Q: Were you strong at that time, too? Like you are now?
Mikasa: NoI took care of the fields

Q: Thats a totally different image from your current self.
Then, can I ask you about the incident that made you an orphan

Q: You dont need to answer that.
In the records, Eren and you fought the robbers together.
Mikasa: Eren came to the place I was taken to.

Q: So he came to save you.
Mikasa: At first, I didnt know who he was

Q: You guys never met, yet he came to your rescue?
Mikasa: Yes. He was prepared to throw away his lifeI was shocked.

Q: So you guys didnt fight together?
Mikasa: I was ready to give up. But then, Eren was about to get killed by one of the robbers.

Q: Did he ask for help?
Mikasa: Nohe said Fight. If you dont fight, you cant win

Q: Thats some amazing mental strength. Did anything change from that incident?
Mikasa: I cant explain properly, butI felt like, I could actually control my body.

Q: The feeling that you could control every single nerve?
Mikasa: I was able to move as I wished. And before I realized it, I had defeated the robber.

Q: I guess that was whenyour talents surfaced.
Mikasa: I didnt really understand, butever since then, there was nothing I couldnt do.

Q: Thanks to Eren, your life changed.
Mikasa: I died once, and it was Eren who gave me strength.
This time, I will be the one to protect him.

Q: So you joined the training corps after that. What were your impressions of your classmates?
Mikasa: I dont really remember

Q: Im sure you had plenty of chances to team up with your classmates who also had good results.
What do you think of Jean Kirschstein?
Mikasa: Ah. Jeanhe fought with Eren often.

Q: If Im not wrong, Jean graduated with nearly the same results as Eren.
Mikasa: His results were good, but he clashed with Eren a lot, so

Q: I seeplease also allow me to ask you about your other classmates.

In the first half, Mikasa Ackerman talked about her experiences before joining the Scouting Legion and her childhood.
We also asked her about her impressions of her classmates.
In the latter half, we inquire about her Survey Corps comrades, daily life, and thoughts on her future.

Q: What about the rest? Like Reiner Braun, who was ranked second after you.
Mikasa: Reinerand Marco, tootheyre both reliable and trustworthy.
They can lead, which is something I cannot do.

Q: Youre rather humble.
Mikasa: Its the truth.

Q: And youre the type to showcase your strength rather than straightout flaunt anything.
Mikasa: I just want to protect Eren wellI dont wish to become like them.

Q: What about the others? I heard you might have some fun stories with Sasha Braus.
Mikasa: ?

Q: Something likethere was a loud noise at night, and when the instructor showed up
Mikasa: Like the time she farted? I thought what I said was appropriate, considering the moment.

Q: I-I see. Then, have the girls in your class ever met up in secret for somethinglike a girl talk?
Mikasa: Girl talk?

Q: Yes, the sharing of secrets whenever you girls gather together.
Mikasa: Likesecret battle strategies?

Q: Uh, nothing related to combat. More about romance and such.
Mikasa: Ohlike who is nicer, who likes whothat kind of topic. I think weve had those, yah.

Q: Youre not interested in that kind of thing?
Mikasa: They told me that my answer is always the same, so they dont invite me often.

Q: Ah, yes, I can imagine. Lets change up the topic to your daily routine. What do you do when you take a break from combat training?
Mikasa: 100 sets of abdominal and back muscle exercises, and then I inspect my 3DMG

Q: I meant outside of your voluntary workouts
Mikasa: Sewing clothes, cooking, going to the market with Eren and Armin.

Q: That seems pretty standard. Whats your best dish?
Mikasa: I grew up in the mountainsso a pheasant and vegetables dish. On break days Ill occasionally cook recipes that mom or aunt Kalura (Carla) taught me, and then eat it with Eren and others.

Q: Eren must love having a taste of home.
Mikasa: AhI hope so.

Q: Then again, during puberty perhaps quantity is more important than quality?
Mikasa: Even if thats the casehell still eat whatever.

Q: When you go shopping, what kind of clothes do you like?
Mikasa: Pretty similar to the others

Q: And you always wear that scarf?
Mikasa: I wash this scarf every once in a while, but there are days I dont wear it.
(T/N: See during Chapter 52s meal)

Q: You seem to care for it very much.
Mikasa: After I wash it with warm water, it becomes very soft.

Q: So having it washed must relax you. What do you do with the other cadets during holidays?
Mikasa: Usually we still have things to do even during rest periods. A day passes by quicklybut, when I was a trainee, I also did some different things.

Q: Such as?
Mikasa: The farm close to us occasionally harvests sweet potatoes and would distribute some to uswe would roast them and enjoy them.

Q: Sounds like a reward in faith.
Mikasa: Sasha is very good at finding the best sweet potatoesJean and Ymir were also invited, too. Connie nearly got burnt.

Q: That seems like a lovely memory. How are your days in the Scouting Legion? Any changes?
Mikasa: Nothing much has changed. Just training a lot before the expedition.

Q: Youre talking about the 57th expedition and the attempt to capture the Female Titan, right?
Mikasa: That time

Q: What happened?
Mikasa: I made a mistakeand the most important soldier of all became injured

Q: Youre talking about when Captain Levi got hurt?
Mikasa: Back thenEren was taken, and I felt lostit was my error.

Q: As someone who has strength that rivals the captains, its surprising that you admit to a mistake like that. Were you scared out of your mind?
Mikasa: I wanted to focus on retrieving Eren, but

Q: You thought you could do it on your own.
Mikasa: I was conceited.

Q: Youve grown up.
Mikasa: Im far from perfectand its vexing.

Q: That was a good opportunity to reevaluate yourself.
Mikasa: I wont repeat the same mistake.

Q: What about the others in the Scouting Legion? Like Squad Leader Hanji Zoe?
Mikasa: I feel likethat personis not a bad person.

Q: Just a pretty weird person
Mikasa: She experiments on ErenI know we have no choice, but I still feel uneasy.

Q: Well, she is pretty hyped up over it.
Mikasa: I understand that she just wants to solve the mysteries behind the titansbut I have to make sure she doesnt overdo it.

Q: Then, in terms of that. I wonder, for you
Mikasa: I will protect Eren.

Q: Of course.
Mikasa: No matter who wants to take him awayIll guard him to the end.

Q: So have you considered what you will do in the future?
Mikasa: The future?

Q: Any big dreams or life goals?
Mikasa: Likewhen Eren will venture outside of the walls?

Q: Yes, do you have that kind of dream?
Mikasa: I dont really, but

Q: But?
Mikasa: If Eren and Armin go forth, I think Ill go as well. To the outside world.

Q: Thats a great dream. I pray that the wish where humanity wins will come true.

Q: Finally, what do you want to say to all the citizens who pin their hope on you?
Mikasa: I understand your judgments and needs, so I wish to live up to your expectations if I can.

Q: Very reliable.
Mikasa: Eren willshould become everyones hope yes, please believe me.

Q: Thank you!

After the interview, Mikasa departs quickly, with the gift from her family member Eren wrapped around her face.
I told her It fits you.
"Yes, thank you"
Theres only that response. Her vaguely flushed face seems to have retreated behind the scarf.
From that demonstration of shyness, it appears that she is a 15-year-old young woman after all.
