A: Annie. She will murmur “whoosh” as she practices low kicks on trees in her dream.

Q: Armin saved Jean when he was knocked out in Chapter 50. Did he thank him?
A: He did properly. Jean always thought of him as a friend he can count on.

Q: I noticed Hanji has a habit of removing her goggles when she gets angry. Does she do that on purpose?
A: When her glasses/goggles are on, she looks at the world around her through a filter. She gets emotional when she’s not wearing them.

Q: Is there any sort of culture like sports within the walls?
A: There’s no modern sports, but there are competitions like throwing a big ring far away, or competitions like throwing horseshoe.

Q: What happened to the north part of the walls?
A: There are titans in the north, but because they tend to target the south, people living there are usually at ease. Even though it’s cold so living there is hard, but there are many people who still wants to live in the north.

Q: What are some of the requests you made when SnK was turned into a anime?
A: I have proposed they add in many minor details, like making Eren into a more useless person. And Director Araki had also given his own suggestions, like the scene in Ep2 where Eren got punched. It was not included in the sсript, but added during the storyboard. I liked that scene.

Q: Have you ever spoken to any shingeki characters in your dreams?
A: Well, I actually didn’t, but I’d like to! But I’ve dreamt of being in war scenes like in “Saving Private Ryan”, but it was like the Easy mode of a game, since the bullets never hit me.

Q: Many soldiers have died during the expeditions…how do they inform the families of the dead soldiers about it?
A: Among the people who are alive, those of higher ranks will visit the families one by one and pass them a letter.

Q: When is Levi’s birthday?
A: The birthday of major characters, including Levi, is already listed in the Outside Guidebook. Please check it out!

Q: Are there winter/summer uniforms for the soldiers? And are there seafood, or creatures like fishes within the walls?
A: The uniforms change according to season. They also have a cloak to fend off the cold. And there are freshwater fishes within the walls!

Q: In vol. 5, Mike met Eren for the first time, and sniffed him. What did he think and felt after sniffing him?
A: Mike felt that he’s more alpha than Eren.

Q: Are there four seasons in shingeki? And are there the concept of song within the walls?
A: It’s not as clear cut as Japan, but they have four seasons. But even the warmest day won’t go over 30 degrees. They also have songs, and Mikasa is pretty good at it.

A: He would probably laugh when he sees super convenient cleaning goods.

Q: Is Commander Erwin not married?
A: Yes. He has no idea when he’ll die, so he’s not married.

A: Yes. Training corps are once a year. There are 4 in Wall Rose (North, south, east and west). There were 8 before Wall Maria fell.

A: Eren expresses himself with his body (actions). (Implying he doesn’t)

Q: Who won the Annie vs Mikasa fight in Vol. 11?
A: It was an enjoyable fight like the one between ノゲイラ and ボブ・サップ! The instructor came and interrupted the fight, so there were no winner.

A: He had lost his hair for a long time, so no one remembers!

The tumultuous youthfulness of a young man with the face of a grown-up.
While he kept remnants of puberty in his physiognomy, as a soldier, Jean Kirstein gave the feeling of being a steady, young boy.
The interview begins by announcing him. He salutes according to the formalities, then, clearly embarrassed, he turns away.

Jean- It’s not like someone told me to. I decided on my own to join the Survey Corps.

It’s nice to meet you.

• I know it can’t be helped, but I guess you can’t avoid thinking about this.

Jean: After the attack, I ended up thinking about who might die next… At that time—I thought that if I had been there, maybe I could have saved them.

[A second part of the interview is planned as well!! Jean is overwhelmed by a storm of questions!?]

• The reason behind “Now, what should be done?” comes from Marco’s words, right?

Jean : … That, and I also felt like I didn’t know how to vent about my regrets and responsibilities. Although, I was in a different squad… If Marco had been with me, I wonder if he would still be alive.

• That’s because he knew you well, right?

Jean: That’s right. When we were about to graduate, for him to say something like “You’re not a strong person, Jean” shows that very well. There were many things… We went through a lot.

• However, Marco’s wish was to join the Military Police as well, right? What are the details on what made his death the reason why you joined the survey corps?

Jean: Marco—said that I was someone who knew “what should be done”. At first, I didn’t pay much attention to these words, but—after the assault on Trost, I understood what he meant. At last, I could see what had to be done. As if I felt like I could try and entrust my fate to the late Marco.

• On the other hand, what are the things that you had to work on?

Jean: There were—many. When I was a trainee, I was absolutely confident that I was excellent. If I think about it now, I was nothing but a brat back then… If I failed even by a little, I would be disheartened right away. During those moments, the one that would stand beside me was Marco.

• What was it that he said to you?

Jean: He was just there, silent. So, yes, even if I wouldn’t stop complaining, he would remain calm…

• For instance?

Jean: I always wanted to get good points during training, I would be in a bad mood whenever I got injured. But Marco would remain like this no matter who he was facing.

• Did your choice of words adapt to the situation?

Jean: No, not really. I was always making fun of him for being an honor student, and yet, Marco—he would just laugh. Really… I wonder why he kept company with someone like me back then, when I was only thinking of myself, and no one else…

• He wouldn’t quarrel with you?

Jean: Well, first of all, that guy got rarely offended… But… he was a good guy to begin with. Way too good. Even though he could always see through everything, he was trying to avoid conflict. He possessed a kind heart, and he was considerate to his friends… He was that kind of person.

• What kind of relationship did you two have?

Jean: Whatever it was, we often hung out together. Our grades were pretty close, so being together during training also became a frequent occurence…

• Well, on the documents I have here, it says that the circumstances behind your decision to join the Survey Corps was the death of Marco Bodt, who fell during battle. Do you feel like you told us enough about him?

Jean: Yeah… I knew you would ask me about him.

• Her job (as MP) is mainly tasks like arranging documents. The Garrison usually deal with the place (crime scenes, maybe?)
• She’s not friendly with the new soldiers (MP) even though she work with them. “They joined the MP because they prioritized themselves above the others, so it’s pointless to look forward to making friends and comrades.”
• When asked about the evaluation (listed on the documents) about her solidarity nature, she replied that she cooperated properly whenever necessary during training.
• When asked about Eren, she replied that even when she said she’s a weak fragile girl, he will still charge over, and so she had no choice but to fight him. Annie: Ah…They joined the SL…?

Q: Yes. All of them have been doing well.
Annie: I see…So they are doing well.

Q: We have received many questions about Armin and Bertholdt. What are your impressions of them?
Annie: Armin…he lacks strength so is often a hindrance, but he doesn’t complain or ask for help…he has will-power.

Q: What about Bertholdt?
Annie: …I don’t have much impression of him?

Q: According to rumors, I heard he is interested in you, and he’s often sitting beside you during meals…
Annie: Yes. But I don’t have much impression of him.

Q: But you really don’t have any impression of him?
Annie: His results are good, and we often end up in the same team during training. But that’s pretty normal, so I never thought much about it.

Armin: I met Eren when I was receiving treatment from his father. I was weak and often got bullied and injured, so I often had to see the doctor. At first, we just hang out together because we had no friends. It was thanks to my Grandpa’s book that we became friends.


- We have received a question which says “How do you behave with Eren typically, because Jean has mentioned that he finds your attachment with Eren disgusting.”
Armin: Ah…That is…really mean, to say that it’s disgusting. I think the problem lies with how Jean sees things.

- What do you mean?
Armin: After I joined the training corps, I often perform my 3DMG check with Marco and sat by Reiner during mealtimes. I guess it’s because Jean is always looking at Mikasa, that he tends to notice us together.


- Do you have a girl you like?
Armin: …I think that having someone you think of as important, can be a strength, and can also be a weakness. I have many times…witnessed people losing their senses, and failing to make sound decisions, after losing someone important to them.

- I see.
Armin: There are also people who are forced into a dilemma because of such special feelings. I think that those feelings are often made use of.

- I guess you can think of it that way.
Armin: That is why, if I have someone I like, I won’t say it. It will become a weakness of mine… just kidding.

- …I feel that I’ve seen a scary smile just now… Now, for the next question, “Have you and Eren or Mikasa ever fought?”
Armin: I have never fought with Eren or Mikasa before. However, there were once when I got thrown by Mikasa, who was trying to stop the fight, together with Eren, since I was stubbornly still fighting with the bullies.

Armin: Hah…do I look this weak…I might not be good, but I managed to pass.


- Here we have some pretty strange questions like “Have you ever been mistaken for a girl?”, and “Have you ever been told you’re like a girl?”
Armin: Ehh…That is hard to answer. It would be a lie…if I were to say no…

- Here’s another question asking “How do you feel if someone calls you cute”?
Armin: Well…I don’t feel good even if I got called cute.

- Any particular thoughts about it?
Armin: For example, if I looked like a girl…and it would help to accomplish a mission…I think, I would make use of it.

- That’s cool.
Armin: Of course I hate it, but for example, in a decoy mission…it would be much safer than using a real girl. But I don’t think such tactics is needed to fight against titans.


- Titans eat irregardless of your genders, I guess.
Armin: But…our enemies, might not be just the titans…

- What do you mean?
Armin: It’s nothing but pure speculations…just that, I can’t say that humanity are always united…

- You mean such a situation where humans have to lie to each other might arise?
Armin: If I’m able to help when that happens…I will want to make use of whatever I can.

Armin: Among my classmates, only Reiner, Bertholdt and Marco are great opponents at chess. Once Eren or Jean gets heated up, their thoughts become simple, and it’s easy to read their moves.


- Is there any of your body parts you like?

Everybody’s names have been mentioned, so we would like to hear about your interpersonal relationships. We’ve got a question that asks, “What impression do you have” of firstly Commander Erwin, then Captain Levi, Squad Leader Mike and Deputy Leader Moblit.

Hanji: Right… I’ve known Erwin and Levi for a long time. Erwin actively supports my research, so he’s helped me a lot. According to what he has said, I think he also holds some kind of doubt towards the structure of this world.

What about Captain Levi and Squad Leader Mike?

Hanji: Levi you see, is bad at talking and a clean freak so everyone gets disillusioned, but he’s a good guy who thinks about his comrades. He has a rough attitude, but he listens to my research results and has the composure to only think about it. Isn’t he’s a good superior officer?


Hanji: (cut off) …Yeah, it’s a strange attitude to people he meets for the first time, but the position of Squad Leader is justified.


What impression do you have of Deputy Leader Moblit, who is also an adjutant?

Hanji: Ah, it depends on the plan or formation but… I’m often stationed close to Levi’s squad, so I think we do talk a lot.


You have mentioned that you’ve known each other for a long time.

Hanji: Levi’s rough with his words, so it sounds like he’s angry, right? But he doesn’t truly feel that way, so there are times I help to explain that to everyone in his squad. Interpretation, people have called it.

Other than Levi, who else do you get along with?

Hanji: When I see the veteran soldiers who enlisted around the same time as me… if they’re still alive, that is… I would talk to them a lot. Also my subordinates.


I see. There are also many questions like, “Can you see with goggles?” and “How good is your eyesight without glasses?” about your glasses or goggles.

Hanji: Without glasses I can still see the face of the person in front of me, but it’s inconvenient during battles or research, I guess. Glasses can easily fall off, so I don’t use them on missions. There are skillful soldiers who can operate 3DMG with glasses, you know, but I’m not very good at it.


We also have a question about your glasses and goggles that goes, “They seem expensive, how many spares do you have?”

Hanji: I keep one or two pairs on hand, if they’re both broken I claim them with the Survey Corps’ expenses.


You put them down to expenses!

Hanji: But they’re necessities, so it’s a required expense! I don’t do things like Levi who claims expenses for the black tea he favors, you know?

That black tea… is paid for with expenses.

Hanji: Yes, glasses and black tea, they’re all supplies for the whole Survey Corps. It’s because our lifestyle is guaranteed like this that there’s no shortage of youngsters who aspire to be soldiers.

You’re certainly right about that. Another question we have is, “Do you do housework?”

Hanji: Like cooking, or cleaning? Hmm, I’ve done it before, on duty.

Trainee soldiers cook their own meals, and on expeditions cooking for yourself is also a must.

Hanji: Well, for me right now, as a Squad Leader, I leave most of it to my subordinates I guess.


We also have the question “What’s your type?” Excluding titans, that is.

Hanji: Ahh… everyone sure likes that kind of topic. I don’t think about it much, but let’s see, someone who is fine even if I can’t pay attention to them, I guess.

You respect freedom.

Hanji: Mm-hmm, for me right now, I’m interested in… mainly titans, and also the structure of the world and so on… way too many things. So, even if I had someone like that, I probably can’t spend much time together with them.

So someone who can accept your behavior and let you be free is ideal, isn’t it.

Hanji: That’s how it turns out. I don’t think such a convenient person exists though.

Do you chat with people like Deputy Leader Moblit?

Hanji: Moblit says things a mother would say. Like, did you eat properly? Or, did you sleep well? And his every word is really funny.

For example?

Hanji: Once, during an experiment I think, he said to me, Do you really want to live!? Pretty much the only one who says such interesting things to me is Moblit!

I see. Then, I’m going to change the topic a bit and introduce an unconventional question. “Please tell us about the time you recently got angry.”

Hanji: Angry? Me? What a strange question.

I’ve been told you’re the scariest when you get angry.
Hanji: That’s not true! Erwin and Levi have way scarier faces! Well… now that I think about it…

Did something come to mind?

Hanji: It’s not recent, but. Long ago, I got into an argument with a Military Police officer who made fun of the Survey Corps… He said such terrible things, I couldn’t take it anymore, and grabbed the scruff of his neck and threw him on the floor… almost.

That’s scary!

Hanji: Haha… It’s the folly of youth. Since Erwin and the others quickly intervened, it didn’t become an issue. Other than that… when I get mad, I kick and wreck tables and chairs… but doesn’t everyone do that?

Uh, I wonder about that… You give a calm impression, but there is something on fire hidden inside you.

Hanji: I’m always on fire! It’s for the sake of unraveling the mysteries of this world!

If mankind were finally liberated from the titans, what would they do?

Hanji: Mankind would rule. But I would like to research vegetation outside the walls, or study about humanity’s past.

Q: Are you nervous?
Mikasa: …a little bit.

Q: I heard you’re not normally good at conversations…
Mikasa: …I will answer any questions asked.

Q: Then I shall accept your advice and begin right away.

Q: Mikasa, you graduated at the top of your class. You could have joined the Military Police, but why did you choose the Scouting Legion?
Mikasa: Because…Eren chose the Scouting Legion.

Q: Eren Yeager, the one from the same class and hometown as yourself. Did he ask you to do this?
Mikasa: No. That was my own decision.

Q: Yeager wanted to enter the Scouting Legion ever since he joined the training corps. You didn’t try to stop him?
Mikasa: You mean…why didn’t I try to convince him to join the other Military Units?

Q: Yes. Because he’s your ‘family,’ so I thought you would recommend the safer routes.
Mikasa: …Now that you mention it, I did…when we were younger, I was against joining the Scouting Legion.

Q: And why did that change?
Mikasa: Because Eren didn’t change his mind. And…

Mikasa: Auntie…Eren’s mother said that we have to help each other.

Q: You spent your childhood with Eren.
How were your days with the Yeagers?
Mikasa: …Ah, we often fought with the other kids in town.

Q: Sounds like you had a happy and normal family.
Mikasa: It was different from living in a town. There were no kids near my house.

Mikasa: …Yes. At that time, my world was small…my father and mother were everything.

Q: Were you strong at that time, too? Like you are now?
Mikasa: No…I took care of the fields…

Mikasa: I can’t explain properly, but…I felt like, I could actually control my body.

Q: The feeling that you could control every single nerve?
Mikasa: I was able to move as I wished. And before I realized it, I had defeated the robber.

Q: I guess that was when…your talents surfaced.
Mikasa: I didn’t really understand, but…ever since then, there was nothing I couldn’t do.

Q: Thanks to Eren, your life changed.
Mikasa: I died once, and it was Eren who gave me strength.
This time, I will be the one to protect him.

Q: So you joined the training corps after that. What were your impressions of your classmates?
Mikasa: I don’t really remember…

Q: …I’m sure you had plenty of chances to team up with your classmates who also had good results.

Mikasa: Girl talk?

Q: Yes, the sharing of secrets whenever you girls gather together.
Mikasa: Like…secret battle strategies?

Q: Uh, nothing related to combat. More about romance and such.
Mikasa: Oh…like who is nicer, who likes who…that kind of topic. I think we’ve had those, yah.

Q: You’re not interested in that kind of thing?
Mikasa: They told me that my answer is always the same, so they don’t invite me often.

Q: Ah, yes, I can imagine. Let’s change up the topic to your daily routine. What do you do when you take a break from combat training?
Mikasa: 100 sets of abdominal and back muscle exercises, and then I inspect my 3DMG…

Q: I meant outside of your voluntary workouts…
Mikasa: Sewing clothes, cooking, going to the market with Eren and Armin.

Q: That seems pretty standard. What’s your best dish?
Mikasa: I grew up in the mountains…so a pheasant and vegetables dish. On break days I’ll occasionally cook recipes that mom or aunt Kalura (Carla) taught me, and then eat it with Eren and others.

Q: Eren must love having a taste of home.
Mikasa: Ah…I hope so.

Q: Then again, during puberty perhaps quantity is more important than quality?
Mikasa: Even if that’s the case…he’ll still eat whatever.

Q: When you go shopping, what kind of clothes do you like?
Mikasa: Pretty similar to the others…

Q: And you always wear that scarf?
Mikasa: I wash this scarf every once in a while, but there are days I don’t wear it.

Mikasa: The farm close to us occasionally harvests sweet potatoes and would distribute some to us…we would roast them and enjoy them.

Q: Sounds like a reward in faith.
Mikasa: Sasha is very good at finding the best sweet potatoes…Jean and Ymir were also invited, too. Connie nearly got burnt.

Q: That seems like a lovely memory. How are your days in the Scouting Legion? Any changes?

Q: As someone who has strength that rivals the captain’s, it’s surprising that you admit to a mistake like that. Were you scared out of your mind?
Mikasa: I wanted to focus on retrieving Eren, but…

Q: You thought you could do it on your own.
Mikasa: …I was conceited.

Q: You’ve grown up.
Mikasa: I’m far from perfect…and it’s vexing.

Q: That was a good opportunity to reevaluate yourself.
Mikasa: …I won’t repeat the same mistake.

Q: What about the others in the Scouting Legion? Like Squad Leader Hanji Zoe?
Mikasa: I feel like…that person…is not a bad person.

Q: Just a pretty weird person…
Mikasa: She experiments on Eren…I know we have no choice, but I still feel uneasy.

Mikasa: I understand that she just wants to solve the mysteries behind the titans…but I have to make sure she doesn’t overdo it.

О воинских званиях в каноне

Бо́льшая часть фандома (как зарубежного, так и русского) убеждена в том, что звание Ривая переводится как Lance Corporal (младший капрал, он же младший сержант) – это одна из самых младших командных должностей в армии. Несмотря на это, он, судя по отношению к нему начальства и подчинённых, занимает довольно высокое положение, что у придирчивого зрителя могло вызвать недоумение. И в своём недоумении он, как оказалось, был прав.

Путаница возникла из-за сокращённой формы звания в оригинальном японском тексте.
Официальное звание Ривая звучит как 兵士長 [heishichou]. В разговорной же речи оно обычно сокращается до 兵長 [heichou] – эта форма слова звучит аналогично реально существовавшему в японской армии званию. Которое и соответствует "младшему капралу" в ВС ряда западных стран и "младшему сержанту" (или "ефрейтору"; ) в ВС РФ. Само же heishichou – звание несуществующее, его можно примерно перевести как "командир войска" (досл.: chou – глава, heishi – солдат).
Стоит заметить, звание не было придумано мангакой: оно нередко используется в играх, действие которых проходит в условном европейском средневековье (например, в Dragon Quest VI). В играх его обычно переводят как "капитан" – так же звучит звание Ривая в официальном переводе манги.

Как нетрудно догадаться, остальные звания тоже являются вымышленными и даны в соответствии с обязанностями, возложенными на того или иного персонажа.
Звание Ханджи Зоэ звучит как 分隊長 [buntaichou] – "командир отделения/отряда" (досл.: buntai - отделение; отряд; команда; группа). В разговорной речи, видимо, сокращается до 隊長 [taichou], что опять же звучит аналогично одному из реально существовавших званий, которое соответствует "капитану" в системах званий европейских государств и США.
Интересно, что реальное taichou ( =капитан) тоже можно перевести как "командир отряда". Дело в том, что если "отделением" называют только самую маленькую тактическую единицу, то "отряд" может быть и равен "отделению" (чаще в непрофессиональной речи), так и быть в разы бо́льшим формированием. В первом случае должность сержантская, во втором - капитанская.

Звание Эрвина Смита звучит как 団長 [danchou] – "командир корпуса" (досл.: руководитель группы (делегации, бригады)). Слово реально существует, но не как звание. В каноне если и сокращалось, то до "командира", а потому путаницы не вызвало.

Касательно иерархии в Разведывательном корпусе.
Если в двух словах, то отряд Ривая и он сам не входят в основную систему формирований разведкорпуса. Т.е. должность его, видимо, всё-таки должна быть примерно равной должности Ханджи, но его отряд стоит особняком: напрямую подчиняется Эрвину и не дробится на более мелкие составляющие. Все остальные отряды, соответственно, дробятся и могут иметь внутренних командиров групп.
Итого: у Ривая и Ханджи звания разные, должность схожа, но звание Ривая отличается от званий остальных отрядных командиров, т.к. его отряд на особом положении.
